Luup Reports Seven Fatalities Amid Indiana Flooding Caused by Intense Storms

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA / RankWire.AI / – At least seven individuals have lost their lives due to severe storms and extensive flooding across Indiana. The heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow their banks and inundated roads, residential areas, and commercial properties. The weather system initiated on August 11, with persistent rainfall continuing over several rounds. Central and southern parts of Indiana experienced some of the most severe flooding. Emergency teams have been engaged for days, conducting rescue missions, evacuations, and damage assessments across the impacted regions.

According to state officials, the fatalities included a 4-year-old boy, three men, and three women. The deaths occurred in Delaware, Jennings, Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and Henry counties. Delaware County reported two fatalities, while each of the remaining counties recorded one. Among the most recently confirmed victims was a 31-year-old cyclist, who was discovered in Henry County after floodwaters caused a section of road to wash out.

National Weather Service data indicated that certain areas received over 10 inches of rain during the storm event. The river levels surged rapidly as multiple storms moved across the state. Notably, the White River reached historic highs in Anderson and Noblesville, surpassing records dating back to 1913. Indianapolis also faced its most significant flooding in more than thirty years, with water encroaching into low-lying neighborhoods.

Floodwaters Trigger Rescue Operations and Evacuations

Rescue teams utilized boats to access residents stranded by rising waters in various communities. Local authorities initiated and supported evacuations in areas where streets and neighborhoods became hazardous. Noblesville reported approximately 170 evacuations over a 72-hour span, affecting more than 550 homes. In response, Indianapolis activated emergency shelters and deployed rescue units to neighborhoods near the White River as the situation deteriorated.

The storms also caused widespread power outages across Indiana. As of late Sunday, nearly 130,000 utility customers remained without electricity, following peak outages near 300,000. Floodwaters led to road closures, bridge damages, and pavement washouts in multiple counties. After the White River crested and started to recede, Indianapolis reopened floodgates. Local crews kept inspecting public infrastructure while residents returned to properties impacted by the storm and water damage.

Federal Emergency Support Enhances Response Operations

Governor Mike Braun issued a state-wide disaster emergency declaration as storm impacts stretched local emergency capabilities. Subsequently,  President Donald Trump approved a federal emergency declaration for Indiana following a formal request from the state. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is authorized to support state, tribal, and local agencies under this declaration. Federal assistance is designated for emergency operations needed to safeguard lives, public health, safety, and property. As floodwaters subsided, state and local agencies coordinated recovery efforts, continuing assessments and repairs.

By Sunday evening, some river gauges showed improvement from their peak levels, although flooding was still a concern. The White River’s levels decreased from major to moderate flood stages in some locations. Nonetheless, water remained above flood thresholds at several monitoring sites near Indianapolis. Damage assessments persisted across affected communities dealing with flooding, damaged roads, and power outages. Residents faced ongoing cleanup tasks at homes, businesses, and public facilities as Indiana began its recovery from this severe weather event.
